Earl Wheeler |
US Navy - 1952
to 1956 Electrician 3rd Class - USS Grand Canyon - Auxiliary Destroyer 28
During his service,
Earl sailed in the Mediterranean and
Cuba areas. Earl
was also a loader on the Twin 40 anti-aircraft gun, and he told of the
first time we had target practice, "the gun really eats up the
ammunition." When they were done with practice they were ordered to
clean up. When they grabbed the empty casings and started to throw
them overboard. The officers put a halt to that in a hurry because
they were brass casings and could be reloaded. Earl also told they
had a steam generator on board strong enough to light the city of
Philadelphia, and that he never served KP (kitchen patrol) as they never
started at the back of the alphabet. |
